<p>The number of households in England is projected to increase at an average of 210,000 a year between 2014 and 2039 according to government figures released on July 12.</p> <p>Average household size is projected to fall from 2.35 in 2014 to 2.21 in 2039 as the number of households increases from 22.7 million in 2014 to 28.0 million in 25 years time.</p> <p>One person households are projected to increase by 68,000 per year, while households headed by someone aged 65 or over are projected to increase by 155,000 a year - three quarters of the total projected household growth.</p> <p>Changes in population account for around 94% of household growth in the period with net migration accounting for 37% of the growth.</p> <p>The government stresses that these are projections, not forecasts. They do not attempt to forecast the impact of policy changes, such as any post-Brexit reduction in inward migration from the EU. Projections “show the household numbers that would result if the assumptions based in previous demographic trends in the population and rates of household formation were to be realised in practice”.</p> <p>To see the summary report click here.</p>
