CPRE launches housing manifesto

The Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) has launched a set of demands they say need to be met before they support an increase in housing. The ten point manifesto said that at least three quarters of new housing should be built on brownfield land. It also said that all new developments should be built at a minimum of 50 homes per hectare. Currently the government’s target is 60% of development on brownfield with new estates built at 30 homes per hectare. The CPRE also calls for the planning system to be strengthened. “A strong planning system is a prerequisite for securing public consensus on the scale, location and pace of change,” said the manifesto. The CPRE also called for more investment in affordable housing. Policy director Neil Sinden said: “It makes absolutely no sense to plan for a massive increase in market housing when people’s overwhelming need is for subsidised, affordable housing.” But the Home Builders Federation (HBF) has dismissed the manifesto.
