Councils told to get rid of housing stock

Two councils are attempting to transfer all of their homes to housing associations next year. In a sign that the government is putting pressure on councils to get rid of their housing stock, Waverley council in Surrey and Aylesbury Vale in Buckinghamshire are to ballot their tenants on the issue, despite earlier tenant votes against the idea. Ministers must ensure that all council homes are brought up to a decent standard by 2010. However the extra money required to achieve this will only be available to councils that switch their homes to new management. In response Waverley’s housing director, David January, said that rental money the government currently takes back could be used to repair houses failing the decent homes standard.
