Cooper faces up to regs challenge

<p>HBF chief executive Stewart Baseley threw down the gauntlet to industry delegates at the annual Housing Market Intelligence conference, challenging them to raise eco standards in housing as a “moral imperative.” Said Baseley: “There is a compelling business rationale for doing so. The industry must choose to embrace, lead and shape a business-friendly and effective regulatory environment, to build greater shareholder value.”</p> <p>He also revealed plans to write to major stakeholders across the industry – including suppliers, housebuilders and housing associations – inviting them to a high level environmental roundtable designed to lead the way and build relationships with government to improve the regulatory environment. Baseley’s views were fully backed by housing and planning minister Yvette Cooper, who addressed delegates on the government’s desire to “work in partnership with the industry.”</p> <p>Signalling the growing strength of the relationship between the HBF and government, Cooper said she recognised housebuilders’ concerns. “I agree with the HBF’s approach to setting standards over a five or ten year timescale, and streamlining our approach to regulations to provide a better framework within which housebuilders can operate,” she said. “But let’s start planning and innovating now.” The minister revealed plans to launch a new round of …
