Continuing support needed for tsunami-affected areas

Following the Asian tsunami international charity Habitat for Humanity (HFH) plans to build 18,500 homes at an estimated cost of £10 million. The charity will use its “building in stages” process, which involves building homes as basic modules that can be easily extended. A typical home costs £250. In Sri Lanka HFH is beginning work on 10,000 core homes, which will take around 12 months. Work is also starting in the Tamil Nadu area of India while in Aceh, Indonesia, work has begun to build 1,450 steel homes in refugee centres. Most buildings will be built from scratch using straightforward techniques that local volunteer labour forces can easily learn.
