Casino rethink could delay Manchester regeneration – Persimmon

East Manchester’s regeneration could be put back by five years because of prime minister Gordon Brown’s decision to rethink the development of a super casino in the area, Persimmon’s north west chairman has claimed. David Broadbent expressed dismay at Brown’s decision to review whether super casinos were needed last month, announced alongside his plans to see three million more homes built by 2020. Brown said the fate of the casinos would be decided after he considered a report on the issue in September. <br><br>But Whitehall sources claim the idea is “dead in the water.” “At the moment there is a ten to 15 year plan [to regenerate east Manchester],”said Broadbent. “That would have been brought forward by five years with the casino; now it has put it back to what the council was originally going to do.” He added: “The casino would have provided a real kick-start to the region with jobs and investment. It would have helped the market locally and one or two developers have taken punts on the basis of what the casino will do for it.” Others, however, have praised the PM’s decision to protect the area from the potential negative impacts of a gambling-fuelled entertainment …
