CALA launches Sustainability Strategy

<p><span>CALA has launched its Sustainability Strategy to achieve operationally net zero carbon homes from 2030. It also plans to reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions, aligning with the Scottish government’s 2045 target and pushing ahead of the UK government’s 2050 target.</span><span></span></p> <p><span>The business said that in addition to using timber frame construction on around 40% of its homes - </span><span>with plans to increase this - </span><span>it was working towards its goal of gas-free homes from 2024.</span></p> <p><span>It has formed internal working groups to explore “other tangible ways CALA can decarbonise its operations”. This includes making progress in specific areas including zero carbon homes, in offices, on sites, procurement and on zero carbon transportation.</span><span></span></p> <p><span>CALA said it would devise a roadmap of “</span><span>targets, measures and areas of interest to pursue as priorities”. </span></p> <p><span>Brian Johnson, CALA’s development director, said the roadmap would include testing of innovations including infrared heat mats and panels, battery and thermal storage technology, hydrogen and electric boilers and mechanical ventilation systems.</span></p> <p><span>“To support the use of such technology in the future, we’re also working with utility providers to inform discussions around the decarbonisation of the grid,” he added. “We have already put in place pioneering measures such …
