Building Safety Bill to be published today

<p><span>The Building Safety Bill is to be introduced to parliament today (July 5), setting out “a clear pathway for the future on how residential buildings should be constructed and maintained,” according to the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG).</span></p> <p><span>In an “extensive overhaul” to building safety legislation following the Grenfell tragedy in 2017, the new Bill is designed to give residents more power “to hold builders and developers to account” and impose tougher sanctions on those who put building safety in jeopardy.</span></p> <p><span>At the centre of these intentions will be the Building Safety Regulator, overseeing the new regime. The regulator will ensure that any building safety issues in new and existing high rise </span><span>residential</span><span> buildings of 18m and above are effectively resolved, “taking cost into account”. </span></p> <p><span>This will involve actioning gateway points at design, construction and completion phases so that safety is considered at each stage of the building’s construction, </span><span>with safety risks captured early,</span><span> MHCLG explained.</span></p> <p><span>These fundamental changes to the building system aim to create the “golden thread” of information – to be stored and updated throughout the building’s lifecycle - as recommended by Dame Judith Hackitt in her Independent Review of Building Regulations and …
