Building safety and innovation discussed at HBF Tech Conference

<p><span>It has been a “long journey” to establish the new building safety regime and there is “plenty more to do,” Bob Ledsome of DLUHC’s building safety programme said today (November 9).</span></p><p></p> <p>Speaking at the Home Builders Federation’s online technical conference, Ledsome gave an overview of the requirements of the Building Safety Bill - due to reach Royal Assent in spring 2022 – which includes a more stringent regime for design and construction, featuring “gateway” points to ensure Building Regulations compliance at each stage of design and construction.</p> <p>“There is a lot in it [the Bill] but a lot of the detail will be filled out in secondary legislation,” Ledsome said. “We are at the end of the beginning but there is plenty more to do”. </p> <p>He later said the various changes to the design and construction regime had been “rooted” in Building Regulations, but that there had not been a “fully consolidated” revision of Building Regulations since 2010. Since then, “there have been innumerable changes”, so an overhaul was “in mind” under secondary legislation.</p> <p>Ledsome also stated that it would be a “good 18 months” after the Bill’s Royal Assent that the gateway regulations would be introduced.</p> <p>Also speaking …
