Building for a Healthy Life launched

<p><span>Design for Homes and Urban Design Doctor have published </span><a href="http://www.designforhomes.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/14JULY20-BFL-2020-Brochure.pdf">Building for a Healthy Life</a><span>, the update to Building for Life 12, which in its new iteration includes a stronger promotion of sustainable travel when planning new housing schemes.</span><span> </span><span></span></p> <p><span>The new name for BfL 12 – the design tool for creating “places that are better for people and nature” – illustrates legislative changes including the introduction of the Environment Bill and revisions made to the 12-point structure of the tool. These 12 points and BfL12’s basic principles remain “at the heart” of Building for a Healthy Life (BHL), the organisations explained.</span><span> </span><span></span></p> <p><span>The new moniker also reflects the bodies involved in the latest edition – Homes England, NHS England and NHS Improvement, with BHL incorporating the findings of the latter two’s Healthy New Towns Programme.</span><span> </span><span></span></p> <p><span>Building for a Healthy Life offers guiding design principles for healthier communities through improved walking, cycling and public transport links, reducing carbon emissions and promoting better air quality and biodiversity.</span><span> </span><span></span></p> <p><span>Design for Homes explained the wide use BfL 12 had enjoyed, with many English local authorities including the guide in their Local Plans and Supplementary Planning Documents.
