<b><b>Bett Homes first foray in to the centre of Glasgow is an ambitious and sizeable hospital site redevelopment. But soaring house prices and a couple of lucky breaks mean the scheme looks set for success despite some complications along the way. Steve Menary reports</b></b><br><b>When the redundant Knightswood hospital in central Glasgow came up for grabs four years ago, the sale represented a major opportunity for Bett Homes. The Dundee-based firm has since expanded as far south as Birmingham but back then had not been able to penetrate into the centre of Scotland&’s biggest city with a major development.</b><br> With a total scheme value of &£38 million, the proposal represents a major slice of work for Bett given that the firm&’s housing arm only turned over &£39.6 million in the six months to February 2002.<p></p><p><b><b>local knowledge</b></b><br> The 20-acre brownfield site was put up for sale by open tender in 1998 and a number of bidders put in deals for the site to the NHS trust.
