Barratt keeps hold of housebuilder top spot

Barratt has maintained its position as Britain’s biggest housebuilder according to this year’s rankings produced for the 2010 Housing Market Intelligence Report and launched this month. <br> <br> The table ranks housebuilders by turnover, and while Barratt’s figure dropped over the period from £3.4 billion to £2.1 billion, these falls were repeated among its rivals. Taylor Wimpey maintained its second spot with turnover of £1.7 billion (last year £2.4 billion) and Persimmon stayed third with £1.4 billion (£1.8 billion). Indeed the Top Six stayed the same, with Bellway, Berkeley and Galliford Try filling the final places. <br> <br> This year’s table – which by and large shows results for 2009 – reflects the depths of the downfall in the industry with the number of homes built in the period by the top six falling from 54,428 to 40,012.<br> <br> The Housing Market Intelligence Report – in addition to revealing Britain’s Top 75 housebuilders – includes analysis of the economy, the housing market, the planning system, demographics and regional trends.<br> <br> New planning data from Barbour ABI in the report reveals that there was a rush to get planning approvals leading up to the election followed by a slump as communities …
