&‘Anti-development lobby must be resisted&’

<b>Allison Heller reports from last month&amp;’s HBF annual conference which focused on the need to find land for the UK&amp;’s much-needed housing.</b><p></p><p>Government and industry should stand up to the anti-development lobby to ensure enough land is released for the UK&amp;’s housing needs, according to speakers at this year&amp;’s HBF annual conference.</p><p> The event, which focused on &amp;“the other 40%&amp;” of land - greenfield sites - heard both economist John Stewart and Joseph Rowntree Foundation advisor Ken Bartlett strongly urge action to release land.</p><p> Bartlett, called for government to &amp;“face down the anti-development lobby&amp;” to which &amp;“the high ground at local authority level has been conceded.&amp;” </p><p> He said: &amp;“The cost of government inaction is too high to pay. Policies in recent years have failed to address land provision. The reluctant use of greenfield land is not meeting short-term demand, and we do not have the capacity to solve the current problem.&amp;” The situation, says Bartlett, is a direct result of the fact that &amp;“the political consensus over the last 50 years is that we don&amp;’t want to pay the cost of providing the housing that is needed.&amp;”</p><p> Bartlett focused of JRF&amp;’s Land for Housing report which exposed the shortfall. &amp;“Government …
