Air source heat pumps are now becoming an increasingly familiar feature of UK homes, and lower Global Warming Potential refrigerants are opening a new phase of regulatory development.
The housing sector also faces overheating. Approved Document Part O has applied since June 2022, and compliance is now becoming a standard consideration. Recent summers have shown how vulnerable many homes are, and cooling demand has reached record levels.
Heat pumps can do more than heat
What if homes could be designed today to address both heating and overheating from the outset?
It was once assumed this required multiple outdoor units, raising concerns about cost and practicality. Air-to-air heat pumps have been used worldwide for decades, longer than many air-to-water applications. They heat efficiently, selected configurations provide domestic hot water through an associated cylinder, and they deliver genuine air conditioning from the same outdoor unit. One system therefore meets both efficiency and overheating requirements without unnecessary complexity.
They also integrate with the PV systems commonly specified. Cooling demand peaks when solar generation is most productive, so on-site generation can support it.
Collaboration will be key
This isn't simply about meeting regulations. It's about creating homes that are comfortable, efficient and fit for a changing climate. Manufacturers, developers, consultants and policy makers sharing what works will accelerate progress.
