The government has put new homes supply at the top of its domestic agenda in a drive to tackle the crisis that faces the UK housing sector. Prime minister Theresa May and her team wish to see 300,000 extra new homes built each year, and the onus of delivering these homes will largely fall on the UK private sector housebuilding industry.

But what exactly does the government require of housebuilders, what policies will drive this and how – crucially – will the industry maintain quality while increasing output? What role would a new ombudsman play and what is the outlook for the economy, the housing market and the structure of the industry? And does the sector need to improve its efforts in attracting a diverse workforce to help bridge the skills gap that could worsen post-Brexit?

The HBF Policy Conference on Wednesday March 21st in London will address these issues, with housing secretary Sajid Javid heading a strong line up of speakers that also includes his Labour shadow John Healey who will give the opposition view.

Redrow chairman Steve Morgan will provide a keynote speech reflecting on his time in the industry as he looks to step back from his role at the housebuilder that he built up from scratch.  Crest boss Stephen Stone will talk about the industry’s work on quality and Bovis chief operating officer Keith Carnegie will open up about the challenges faced by his firm in 2017 and the steps taken to turn the ship around. NHBC ceo Steve Wood will describe NHBC’s role in the quality debate.

Countryside’s chief financial officer Rebecca Worthington will discuss the challenges of expanding and diversifying the industry’s workforce and Shelter’s ceo Polly Neate will give her take on the housing crisis and potential solutions.

Moelis + Co md Mark Aedy will provide a City view of the sector and the challenges ahead and Savills’ director of residential research Lucian Cook will give his views and analysis of the UK housing market.

With HBF experts such as executive chairman Stewart Baseley and planning director Andrew Whitaker also on the agenda, and under the careful stewardship of chair Natalie Elphicke, ceo of The Housing and Finance Institute, the conference is essential for anyone involved in the UK housebuilding sector and interested in the drive to increase UK new homes supply.
