The market
There has never been a greater need for
increasing the supply of high quality and
sustainable housing – and the government
remains committed to ensuring that housing
remains high on its agenda and that the
industry rises to the challenge of tackling the
UK housing crisis.
The industry is being asked to increase housing supply from about 160,000 a year presently to 240,000 a year in 2016 – and these houses must by then be zero carbon homes to minimise the environmental impact of housing growth.
For housebuilders this means 2008 and the
years beyond will be challenging and exciting
as they look to increase supply while
innovating in areas of product development,
energy consumption and water and waste
management.
In November 2007 the Callcutt review of housebuilding delivery found that the 2016 targets were achievable if industry worked together with local authorities to deliver.
The challenge is there for the industry, and the industry is now set to respond. To do so, housebuilders and suppliers will need to work together.
