John Stewart
John Stewart is Director of Economic Affairs at the Home Builders Federation and Editor of the monthly Housing Market Report. He coordinated HBF’s response to the Barker Review and s HBF’s main contact with the Callcutt Review of Housebuilding Delivery. His direct responsibilities include the Planning-gain Supplement, Housing Production Barriers (Barker 33 and MMC), Affordable Housing Policy, Customer Satisfaction, taxation, the economy, the housing market, housing affordability and demographic trends. He manages HBF’s two industry trends surveys and compiles a quarterly regional housing affordability index. He has recently obtained funding for a major study of the impact of regulation on the housing mix produced by house builders, whether this meets market demand and the concept of ‘sustainable communities’.
Before joining HBF in 2003 he was an independent consultant for 12 years and previously divisional Sales & Marketing Director for house builder Wates.
He contributes an award-winning monthly Viewpoint column to Housebuilder magazine and is a frequent conference speaker. His publications include Building a Crisis (2002), the first report to highlight the growing housing supply crisis in England and its social and economic consequences, and Room to Move? (2005) which examined the links between household growth and dwelling sizes, drawing on the results of a major academic study for HBF.
