HBF Future Talent Conference 2016

HBF FUTURE TALENT CONFERENCE 2016 6 & 7 July 2016, EMCC Nottingham

A residential event
The housebuilding industry is “crying out for talent” and new entrants to the sector should be open minded about the careers they pursue, Peter Andrew, deputy chairman of the Home Builders Federation (HBF)

Speaking at the HBF Future Talent Conference in Nottingham, Andrew said that the housebuilding sector had changed immensely since he joined it, when it was considered “second rate to construction. Now it’s much more professional and it drives the economy.”
He used his varied career within housebuilding to highlight the diversity of roles within the industry, encouraging graduates attending the conference to be open about their own trajectories as this could lead to success. “It doesn’t matter what you do – if you show you have ingenuity and can problem solve, companies will grab you and put you in places you wouldn’t have thought of.
“It’s a small industry. If you’re willing to move around, you’ll get noticed.”
Also addressing the impact of Brexit thus far on housebuilding, Andrew said that away from the south east, the referendum result had registered little. “So it’s all about sentiment. Housebuilders are well placed, and customers want to buy.”
But over the next few years, sentiment would be key. However, he added, the Help to Buy equity loan scheme would keep the bottom end of the market “strong” for the foreseeable future.
Also speaking at the conference, HBF’s director of external affairs John Slaughter, talked about the aim of the new Home Building Skills Partnership and said there was a “good story to tell” about the industry’s image. “Housebuilding fulfils a social and economic role. But there is more we can do to attract more talent.”
The conference also included workshops for graduates on industry image, offsite solutions, leadership and planning.

This residential event was held at the East Midland Conference Centre (EMCC), part of the Nottingham University Campus and began on the 6 July with a networking buffet and the evening speaker James Wilson, from Davidsons Developments.  Delegates stayed next door at  the brand new Orchard Hotel, adjacent to the EMCC, before starting the next day's conference back at the EMCC, rested and ready to face the day.
