HBF Policy Conference 2016
HBF POLICY CONFERENCE - 22 March 2016The HBF Policy Conference 2016 focussed on new homes delivery and finding the skills to build at the speed required and to the requisite quality.
HBF executive chairman Stewart Baseley told the conference that more than 45,000 new homebuilding workers will be trained by 2019 to help tackle the nation’s housing shortage through a £2.7 million initiative launched by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) and HBF.
He also said that research and projections by the industry suggested – given economic and political stability – that the target of 200,000 homes per annum will be reached in the next 18 to 24 months.
Housing minister Brandon Lewis outlined the initiatives that the government had introduced to help builders build, and gave an impassioned plea for everyone in the industry to play their part in solving the housing crisis.
Lewis also talked about the Starter Homes initiative, saying a consultation on the initiative was due “imminently” and stressed that the government was not getting rid of Affordable Housing in the process, but was “expanding it and evolving it”.
David Montague, ceo of housing association L&Q, detailed the new rules that his sector is facing and changes his organisation and others are making in the way they operate to survive and thrive in the new climate.
Lord Bob Kerslake told the audience of his concerns about the Housing and Planning Bill and the changes the House of Lords may push for in the legislation, and there were also illuminating speeches from Mark Aedy of Moelis & Co and Barratt procurement director John Adam.
HBF director of economics John Stewart as ever gave a detailed analysis of the market, while planning director Andrew Whitaker updated delegates on his area of expertise. HBF’s John Slaughter put flesh on the bones of the skills initiatives that the industry is working on.
